You have been asked to adapt a text to a brand-new format, to elevate it beyond what it once was, and so you and your collaborators gather at a table, literal or metaphorical, and you begin to talk. You ask each other questions; what ifs, and who’s, and whys. And with confidence you raise your voice to answer.

You do not worry about original intent. You toss fidelity out the window. Instead, you take on the role of authors, designers, cinematographers, actors, auteurs. You have wrested control of narrative you once observed and you intend to do what you wish with it.

After all, in order to adapt you must be willing to commit betrayal.

Kubrick is a Belonging outside Belonging Game for 3-5 players based on the method Stanley Kubrick used to adapt texts into movies. In it you are prompted to ask questions, deepen textual relationships and play your favorite characters as you figure out where a story you thought you new may take you.

An incredible twist on BoB games that reframe their mechanics, and the narrative of film and TV, in a fascinating way. Highly recommend!

Very excited to try this game out. I teach a university course on adaptation, and would love to use this in that course at some point.
